Discover the Magic of the Amazon: Wildlife, Rainforest, and Nature Adventures in Iquitos, Peru

Iquitos, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon, is a city steeped in history and natural wonder. Once a booming center during the “rubber fever” of the late 19th century, Iquitos still bears the legacy of this era with its grand mansions and opulent houses adorned with Portuguese mosaics. Among the notable landmarks is the iconic Iron House (Casa de Hierro), designed by the renowned French engineer Gustave Eiffel, a testament to the city’s past prosperity.

The riverfront promenade of Iquitos offers stunning views and a leisurely space to stroll. Just across the river lies the picturesque Padre Isla, which can be easily accessed by boat, offering lush landscapes and tranquil settings. The region boasts several captivating lagoons such as Mapococha, Moronacocha, and Quistococha, each perfect for exploring. The Quistococha Zoo, located near these lagoons, is a great place to observe Amazonian wildlife up close, offering visitors a snapshot of the incredible biodiversity of the rainforest.

A Diverse and Rich Ecosystem: Explore the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon River Basin, covering over 6.1 million square kilometers, is one of the planet’s most extraordinary ecosystems. Spanning nine South American countries, including Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, it supports over 30,000 plant species, nearly 2,000 fish species, and a vast array of mammal and bird species, many of which are unique to the region.

The Amazon River, the longest, widest, and deepest river on Earth, flows for about 7,100 km from the Andes in Peru to the Atlantic Ocean. With an impressive discharge of approximately 210,000 cubic meters per second, it surpasses the combined discharge of the next nine largest rivers in the world. Its vast network of sub-basins includes the Negro, Xingú, Madeira, Tapajós, and Juruá rivers, with the Solimões and Madeira rivers contributing the majority of the basin’s flow to the Atlantic.
